The book was written by Jeffrey Zaslow based on the last lecture of Randy Pausch, a professor of computer science at Carnegie Mellon University. The tradition was that of the professor delivering his final lecture to his students, which usually occurs when a professor is retiring. In Pausch’s case, he participated in the tradition because he had been diagnosed with pancreatic cancer and was expected to live less than a year.

He delivered the lecture, “Really achieving your childhood dreams” to students of Carnegie Mellon in 2007. The Last Lecture book contains the lecture itself, which largely comprises stories told by Pausch.

Each story begins with a dream or goal that he had set for himself. Each goal was met by an obstacle. Each segment of the lecture concludes with the story of how he overcame the obstacle and achieved the dream. The stories are often funny, always moving, and incredibly poignant giving the circumstances under which they are being told.

Most importantly, Pausch’s lecture contains everything that he wants his young children to remember about him, and everything that he believed in.
